RPR Ammo Test: Aguila HV vs. CCI Mini-Mag

https://youtu.be/GPr3OLGh4fc

Aguila Super Extra High Velocity and CCI Mini-Mags are my go-to 22LR for my pistols and semi-auto rifles. Super Extra HV is usually cheaper but CCI runs more reliably on more of my pistols. Both are 40grn CPRN bullets with only a 20fps difference in their velocities. While Super-Extra HV claims faster speed, Mini-Mags shoot with more pronounced pop.

Testing both in my factory Ruger Precision Rimfire Rifle (RPR), Aguila edged CCI by a significant margin (2x) in the data. CCI did experience more random fliers than Aguila, causing worse scores. But looking at the groups, the differences between the rounds appeared subjectively closer.

SHOT 2025 Aguila 556 Battle Bag

At the Aguila booth in SHOT Show 2025, they showed off such a no-brainer innovation. Their 5.56mm ammo will now also come in 30-round boxes. Considering 30-round magazines have been the military standard for the M16 platform for over a quarter century, it’s about time. Prior to this, 5.56 (and 223) ammo was normally sold in 20-round boxes. Moreover, Aguila is offering these boxes in 450-round sealed polymer Battle Bags with built-in handles for fast and environmentally protected handling and transport.

RPR Ammo Test: CCI Standard vs. Aguila Standard

CCI Standard Velocity is a popular 40gr LRN 22LR ammo among my club’s bullseye pistol and precision rifle shooters for its consistency. Some shooters consider it almost as good as match-grade ammo. I wanted to test its performance against the cheaper Aguila Super Extra Standard Velocity.

Testing both at 100 yards with my factory Ruger Precision Rimfire Rifle (RPR) with a Discovery Optics LHD budget 8-32×56 FFP scope. Aguila edged CCI by small amount based on my measurements using Range Buddy on my phone. The difference is performance is smaller than the difference in price, Aguila Standard Velocity being 25%-50% cheaper than CCI Standard.

New Aguila 20ga Minishells

https://youtu.be/XJyoV_jHULc

A few years ago Aguila invented the Minishell, a 12 ga. buckshot shell that was half the length of traditional shotgun shells. The Minishell round was released along with Mossberg’s new handheld defensive Shockwave pump shotgun. Minishells sacrificed range and spread but effectively doubled the magazine capacity which is more than a fair trade-off in defensive applications.

This year, they introduced a 20 ga. version of the Minishell for use in 20 ga. shotguns preferred by smaller frame shooters like young adults and many women. Given the increased need for home-defense firearms the last few years, this new load option is sure to find many customers.

New Aguila Rata 22LR

At the Aguila booth this year, Luis showed me their new packaging for the relaunch of their 22LR shotshell cartridges, renamed “Rata”, spanish for rat. Aptly named as this speciality cartridge was designed for dispatching fast moving pests at close range. Rata is unique in that it uses #10 bird shot, which are larger balls than their competitors such as CCI and Federal.

Because of the low recoil energy of this shells loading, this round does not cycle reliably in semi-auto firearms and should be used single-shot or in revolvers. Luis provided me with their gun range ballistics gel footage showing how effective it is in squirrel sized target. While not immediately obvious due to the small shot size and clear gel, on closer review of the footage, you can see multiple concurrent hits on the gel and an obvious transfer of energy. That varmint is d-e-a-d.

New Aguila 9mm JHP

At the Aguila booth at Shot Show 2023, they were excited to show me their newest pistol cartridge offering, a 124gr. 9mm jacketed hollow point round designed to offer greater energy on target than the usual 119gr. bullet. While the term “stopping power” is widely regarded as a marketing term, no one can argue with basic physics; the heavier the projectile, the greater the force imparted on the target. And that’s a good thing.
