TMI Livestream Ep#240930

Thanks to my special guest Linq Chen of Discovery Optics for joining my Too Much Information Livestream to talk about the thinking and engineering behind their new ED-AR 1-8×24 LPVO. This is the scope that I reviewed and it’s one of the best budget FFP LPVOs out there. During this episode we watched my drop test video and showed the scope surviving a 2m drop and holding zero.

In this episode we also gave away a new pair of GT Media N4 night vision goggles. I recently tested these budget electronic NVG which is also a night vision camera able to take 1080p video.

During the show we also gave away a Guns.com swag bag and a Colt firearms swag bag to viewers on the live chat. If I get enough interest in doing a livestream, I’ll start doing this regularly.

Finally, I’d like to to especially thank American Hillbilly for letting his assistance on the show tonight.

Jade Struck interview at Arken

https://youtu.be/eyPQU4QSJeM

At SHOT Show 2024, I was invited by Arken Optics to interview Jade Struck, competitive shooter, firearms instructor for Keanu Reeves on John Wick, the face is Call of Duty’s “Iskra”, and proud Arken LPVO shooter. Jade has a remarkable resume and is an equally remarkable individual. She is one of the most physically fit firearms instructor I’ve ever met and she owes that inspiration her husband, former marine, Rudy Reyes.

In a feature rich half-hour conversation that ranged from working with celebrities, her competition background, the importance of fitness, Christian faith, and our favorite Batman actor. Thanks to Arken Optics for sponsoring this video and the opportunity to meet and be inspired by Jade.

DC Predator interview at Arken

DC Predator is an Instagram and YouTube channel of Scott Morris, his brother Ken, and son Kamron; a family of hunters from Arizona who have posted some of the most cinematic hunting footage this side National Geographic. Cam Morris is the primary cameraman for the channel and he brings his photo and videography experience to his family’s coyote hunts. And in case you’re wondering, I asked. DC is not a reference to our nation’s capitol. DC stands for “Death Clap”, the sound of a varmint going down.

Pewview at Arken

Nick Johnson started his TikTok and YouTube channel “Pewview” practically on accident. He was friends with popular Guntuber “Honest Outlaw” and would sometimes shoot with him at Outlaw’s backyard range. Outlaw would film Nick him during speed shooting practice (3gun and 2gun). Oh a whim, Nick posted a few videos on his TikTok and within days they gained millions of views.

Now nick has almost a million subscribers on Pewview with less than 200 videos. How did this guy get so big so fast? Looking at his videos, its easy to see why. He’s a competent and fast marksman and presents gun reviews and shooting tips that are practical, authentic, and without ego.

He’s been a long time owner of Arken scopes and recently started a partnership with Arken. I caught up with him at the Arken booth at SHOT Show 2024 and had an opportunity to sit down for an interview with him.

Feyachi FL-46 Flashlight

Feyachi sent me their new right angle rechargeable flashlight, the FL-46. Right angle flashlights are not new. The design was boy scout and military standard since before WWII. Right angle flashlights can be attached to the wearer’s chest, backpack straps, or pocket to illuminate while allowing wearer both hands free.

The box that the FL-46 comes in is a little fancier than Feyachi’s normal packaging, with a pull drawer. The flashlight comes with a nylon holster, USB-C charging cable, and user manual. The charging port is located under a plastic sliding panel at the base. The FL-46 can be stood on its tail and attached to your pocket or strap with a metal double-direction clip.

The controls are basic, with a silicone clicky button at the right angle bend. Pressing turns turns it on and each tap cycles through its modes: On>High>Strobe>Off. Pressing it for over 1 sec. will also turn the flashlight off. The FL-46 lacks mode memory or momentary on.

In my testing, the “Regular” on mode output more than its stated 300 lumens by over 50%. It’s “High” mode was just above to its stated 500 lumens. Fully charged, the unit had a run time in excess of 400 minutes. It dimmed considerably after the first hour but stayed in a candlelight dim output well past the 300 minute mark when I had to cut the test due nightfall and the lack of light for the camera to read my timer.

If this light has just too many flaws for me to recommend it. It lacks mode memory and a means to lock out the strobe mode. Furthermore the plastic dust cover for the charging port leaves the light at only IPX4 water resistance; a glaring oversight for a “tactical-style” flashlight for it not to be rain-proof. This light might be better suited for workshops, repairmen, or mechanics.

How easy are returns on Temu?

I recently made my first online order on Temu and mused, “I don’t know what their return policy is like?” Well now I know. Within my first order, a laser disco ball light was defective and even though it was cheap (less than $5), Temu did heavily advertise they offered “Free Returns” and I was eager to find out if this was for real.

In order to process a return I had to upload photos or a short 00:30 video demonstrating the problem. Videos longer than :30 are rejected by their website upload page. In my case, one of the three disco lights I had purchased, didn’t change color when music or sound played.

If approved, they offer a free downloadable return mailing label. You have to box up all the item(s) you wish to return from each order. You can return multiple items from your order but if you’ve already shipped a box and discover another defective item, Temu will not give you a free shipping label but will instead charge you $7.90 for it.

In my product return process, they approved my return and told me that I didn’t have to return the products. Probably because it would cost them more to ship it back than the item was worth. Overall the experience was relatively easy, similar to AliExpress but not quite as easy as Amazon.

Cyclops Joe 100K Subs

Joe Rhea (aka. Cyclops Joe) is one YouTube’s most prolific and profane optics reviewers. I’ve been a long time fan and subscriber. He reached out to me when I first started posting pewpew videos and offered both praise on my editing skills and advice on YouTube as a business model. He profiled my work on his channel and I thought I’d return the favor by promoting the fact that he recently crossed the 100,000 subscriber benchmark.

I contacted leading brands in rifle optics and got many of them to send videos to this collaboration. There were quite a few more who wished to express their appreciation to Joe but were not able to send a video in time for me to include it. And a few who are good friends with Joe but can’t publicly admit that because their brand doesn’t want to be closely associated with a non-PC foul-mouth.

Here is the “clean” version of the video with the full length comments.

Fulaim Cardioid Lav Mic

Lavalier or Lav mics for short are a mainstay of film and video audio. They allow you to record a subjects voice or dialogue while helping to isolate their voice from background noise. This isn’t always fully achievable in a noisy environment but its results are generally much better than the audio from the camera’s built-in microphone.

Microphones generally come in two audio pickup patterns: omni-directional and cardioid. Cardioid patterns are more sensitive to sound directly in front of the microphone and less sensitive to background sound. But cardioid lav mics generally require an outside power source (Phantom Power) to drive their electronics. And cardioid lav mics are also generally more expensive.

I was surprised and a little dubious when I found that a company named Fulaim sells a microphone that they claim has a cardioid pattern that can be plugged directly into a camera or 3.5mm jacked phone without the need for Phantom Power from a mixer. I was even more incredulous when I saw the price. At the time I purchased it, I paid $12.99 on Amazon and it has since dropped to $9.99!

The Fulaim lav mic has a very long 19.7″ cable. The Fulaim unit uses a standard 3.5mm audio jack with a control switch can be selected for either TRS (camera or stereo audio) or TRRS (phone) connections. The control panel also contains a switch to select for either Omni or Cardioid polar patterns.

For the audio testing, I went to the Stonestown Shopping Center the weeked after Christmas when I knew the mall would be full of shoppers. This presents a difficult challenge for any video audio on the best of times, with crowds of people walking, talking and plenty of reflective surfaces to create echos and amplify and the background clutter.

I connected a Rode Wireless Go II unit to my Samsung Galaxy S22 phone. One transmitter picked up raw audio through its built in omni-directional microphone. I plugged in the Fulaim lav mic to the other transmitter. Each transmitter was on its own split audio channel so I could hear the difference.

I tested the Fulaim in both omni and cardioid modes. I could clearly hear a difference when using the Fulaim in cardiod mode vs the Fulaim in omni mode or the raw sound from the Rode transmitter. The Fulaim in cardioid did not isolate my voice from the background noise but it was noticeable though subtle improvement. Overall sound quality was typical for a budget lav mic. Useable but not anything as true or rich as a professional lav mic.

I also compared this to a $36 Comica cardioid lav mic which had with slightly lower audio pickup. After adjusting the gain in post, the Comica and Fulaim sounded identical in terms of voice isolation. The Fulaim had slightly more bass response and was a 1/3 the price of that budget lav mic option.

For serious videographers and film makers, the Fulaim will not replace your hundred dollar Shure or Sennheiser lav mics. But for budget vloggers and content creators, the Fulaim lav mic at under $15 is a no brainer. Buy it and use it so we don’t have to hear the distractions.
