Prohear quietly released an updated version of their bluetooth electronic shooting earbuds. Their primary use is hearing protection when shooting firearms. This new version features enhanced sound quality, so that you can also use them as music/media earbuds, addressing a complaint of their original version and upgrading to digital from the analog volume controls.
The buds come in a USB-C charging case that is capable of recharging the earbuds up to 3 times. The buds also come with replacement foam and silicone earpads. They are activated by pressing the button on either earbud for 6 seconds, and pressing both 4 times activates Bluetooth pairing.
Testing them at the range, I found them very comfortable and their small size makes shooting rifles a lot easier for noobs. Strangely, though the earbuds have a 27 NRR, my rifle sounded louder with the earbuds than with my 22 NRR Prohear Machete earmuffs. One theory is that with eabuds, because your ear isn’t covered, sounds get picked up by the cartilage of your ear and transferred into your skull. I don’t know if that’s true but it sounds plausible.
I may just go back to using my old earmuffs. But in any case, these buds are small enough for me to keep as a backup in my range bag.
Safety on a gun range is paramount. Communication between Range Safety (RSO) staff is vital to do their job, and two-way radios are a useful tool, but this can be a challenge when wearing electronic earmuffs. It is possible to connect earmuffs to walkie-talkies, but it requires additional attention to wire management.
The RHO8 is a clip-on accessory to ProHear shooting electronic earmuffs, adding the ability of walkie-talkie radio communication using FRS/GMRS. The unit clips to Howard Leight Impact Sports compatible headphones into the earcup that has a 3.5mm audio jack. The RH08 has a built-in battery and is recharged via a USB-C cable.
In testing, I was able to clearly communicate with a fellow RSO who was using a handheld walkie-talkie. The talk/transmit button is on the mic stem, which pokes a few inches beyond the earcup. It is comfortable to wear, and the added weight and bulk isn’t really noticeable. The only downside to using this instead of a handheld radio is that the LCD display is only visible when you take off your headphones.

After I visited the ProHear booth at SHOT Show 2025, they reached out to offer me their EM066 electronic earmuffs to test. I received a set of earphones that looked suspiciously similar to my go-to headphones, Howard Leight Impact Sports. There has been some online speculation that ProHear makes Howard Leights or that they are both made at the same Chinese factory. But after my testing, I’m nearly certain this is not the case.
The EM066 are labeled “Machette” headphones. On first blush, they look very similar to the Howard Leights with slightly harder edges in their design. The most obvious difference is the EM066’s microphone grill covers and the vertical orientation of its volume wheel. The EM066 was designed to use Howard Leight compatible ear pads, which necessitate its nearly identical physical specs.
Like Howard Leights, the EM066 renders stereoscopic sound and a 4-hour automatic power cut-off to preserve battery life should the user forget to switch the unit off (something I’ve been guilty of with other headphones). The sound quality of ambient sounds is not identical. The EM066 renders a thinner and tinier sound environment when replicating ambient noise. The EM066 is capable of being louder than the Howard Leights.
Next, I tested the EM066 sound quality using an AUX audio cable; the music sounded slightly better than Howard Leights, though both had mediocre bass response when playing House music. A headphone’s ability to render music is a good indication of a headphone’s ability to recreate a realistic representation of the sound environment.
Testing the EM066 at the gun range, they cut out gunshots without completely cutting off voices mid-conversation like other cheap, budget headphones. I could carry on a normal conversation amidst the sound of gunfire. The EM066 padded headband and foam plastic earcups were comfortable, though I will be looking to upgrade them with gel earpads.
Overall, these headphones have all the best features of my beloved Howard Leight Impact Sports and a few subtle improvements.
