LENT The 40 days of religious reflection and atonement before Easter in the Roman Catholic calendar, starting on Ash Wednesday and concluding on Easter Sunday. Practices include: Prayer (justice to God) Fasting (justice to self) Almsgiving (justice to neighbor)
Lent observances were officially codified as a 40-day observance during the Council of Nicea in 325. The duration, it’s start and end days vary by Christian denomination. The Eastern Orthodox church observes a different calendar.
Lent is an Old English word similar to lente in Old Dutch, or lenz in Old-German / now früling which means Springtime.
Lent was the most significant and holy days of the year in the Christian calendar. Easter not Christmas is the holiest day of the year, though modern secular traditions and a music would have you think otherwise. When was the last Easter Song you heard played on the radio?
During those 40 days early Christians would abstain from eating from sunrise to sunset. Since Vatican2 in the late 1960’s it’s just been relaxes to only abstaining from meat on Fridays during lent. To me that’s the beginning of coddling Woke-isms relaxing of self discpline. Before 1970, Catholics used to abstain from meat every Friday. That’s why McDonalds invented the Fillet-o-Fish
Why 40 days? 40 is a holy number in Biblical and cultural tradition of the middle-east. Noah was adrift for 40 days and 40 nights. Elijah and Jesus spent 40 days in the desert. In certain Jewish traditions, the 10 Plagues of Egypt lasted 40 days before Moses was allowed to leave Egypt. And the Tribes of Israel wandered the desert for 40 years before they found the Promised Land.
But why 40? 40 days is considered a long period of time in pre-history. It’s approximately 1 week past a full lunar cycle.
But I couldn’t find hard reason cited in my research into Sumerian traditions. Sumeria had a base 60/12 number system. That’s where we get 360 degrees in a circle, 60 minutes in an hour, 60 seconds in a minute. 12 hours in a day. They counted using 1 hand to the number 12.
40 is a common holy number in the Indo-European region. One country where 40 came up is Kyrgyzstan. Krygz is the origin of one of my most favorite villians in cinema, the Kurgan from Highlander.
Highlander came out in 1986 and they’re filming a remake staring Henry Cavill and Dave Bautista. The Kurgan was played by Clancy Brown who voices Mr. Crabs on Spongebob Squarepants
