SHOT2025 KelTec PR57

Just before SHOTShow 2025 KelTec announced the release of a pistol that was strange and unusual; even for KelTec and that’s saying something. The PR57 is a compact double-action-only pistol, chambered in 5.7, with an internal 20-round magazine, which means this is a clip-loaded pistol.

Stripper clip pistols haven’t been common since the early 20th century. And nobody I know of has made a new one in decades. It is probably no coincidence that the most recent clip-loaded pistol was the Zytec Grendel which the founder of KelTec invented.

I had a chance to try out this pistol at the SHOT2025 Range Day. Jokes about KelTec reliability aside, it appeared solid and equal to KelTec’s pistols in build quality and construction. Notable was its double-action trigger (which is also becoming exceedingly uncommon) which also functioned as the slide disassembly lever when pushed forward.

It was remarkably light at 14oz unloaded and loading and unloading it was simple enough using their adapter/loader which functions like a stripper-clip in function. Shooting, it had had a lot less recoil and snap than a 9mm or .38 of similar size. It shot flat and accurately (I was able to hit an IPSC plate a few times at 100yrds though any misses were shooter error).

It is a much better pistol than I gave it credit. But I think it’s a solution looking for a problem as its utility seems to elude me. And 5.7 is not a caliber I want to get into due to its cost per round. THE PR57 will probably attract the gun buyers who want something very different at the range, that can cause other folks to ask to try it.

New KelTec KSG410

KelTec came out with KSG, an innovative double-tube bullpup pump shotgun a few years ago. I got a chance to shoot the single-tube KS7 model during a video review two years ago. It was very easy to maneuver and point due to its compact size but it’s light weight and polymer construction really transferred the recoil energy, making even birdshot feel like shooting slug.

In reaction to the desire for a lighter shooting defensive shotgun, KelTec developed a KSG chambered in the svelt .410 shell originally designed by Elley in the late 1800’s for backyard pest control, birding, and self-defense (in cane guns!). These shells are the size of chapstick tubes but shoot slugs bigger than a 9mm bullet. While shooting with the same recoil as a Sub-2000.

While small compared to a 12 ga. shell, .410 shells are still quite formidable at close range where the KSG excels. It’s not then surprising that KelTec (always the iconoclast), chose to chamber their next KSG variant in .410 instead of a 20 ga. This new pump shotty is due to hit retailers later in Q3 2023.

New KelTec R50

KelTec is the Mad Genius of the firearms world, creating a range of innovative and unique gun designs like my folding 9mm Sub-2000 carbine. At last year’s SHOT, they showed me a prototype of a Carbine Kit for their P50 5.7 pistol. Perhaps for regulatory or other reasons, they chose not to release that kit. Instead developed a fully assembled R50 rifle variant of the P50 pistol.

For all intents and purposes this appears identical to the Carbine Kit conversion of the P50 they showed me last year. Its obvious they planned to create one from the start because all P50s come with a cut-out in the lower hand guard for their folding stock. Due to recent DOJ policy changes regarding pistol braces, some features and variants will no longer be available for this rifle.

The KelTec website states they expect a Q3 product release. I would take that with a grain of salt considering they had planned to release the Carbine Kit last year. Regardless, us oppressed captives of the State of California may never see the P50 until KelTec releases a non-folding CA complaint model.

Missouri Tactical Grip and Rail Cover Review

A review of Missouri Tacticals grip covers, picatinny rail covers, and M-lok rail covers for the Kel-Tec Sub2000. Thanks to Missouri Tactical for supplying these samples for this review and the discount code for my viewers.

The grip cover is similar to the Hogue grips on a pistol. It takes a fair bit of strength to muscle the cover over a grip but with my Tyvek hack, it makes it a bit easier. The grip feature a palm-swell to tightly fit in your hand. The Picatinny rail and M-Lok covers help provide a firm grip on your rifle along with protection for your handguard.

Missouri Tactical Sub2000 Recoil Pad Review

A review of the Missouri Tactical Sub2000 Gen2 Recoil Pad. It really helps to reduce felt recoil on the KelTec Sub2000. It slips easily onto a stock Gen2 buttstock and attaches firmly. Missouri Tactical sent me a sample unit after watching my Sub2K recoil hacks video.

Some may dismiss the need for a recoil pad on a 9mm carbine. While this is no 308 rifle, the design of the butt pad of a Sub2000 is far from being a moulded smooth surface of a hunting rifle. Its narrower and less comfortable than an M4 buttstock.
