Stretching It Challenge: TAC-22

YouTuber @dayattherange posted the Stretching It challenge on his channel. Elijah has invited his viewers to download his target and see how well they can group 22LR from a distance of 100 yards. https://dayattherange.com/stretching-it-2025-year-long-challenge/

I chose to take part using my factory-stock CZ 457 VPC, topped with an Area 419 Picatinny rail, and a Discovery Optics XED 6-36×56 scope (their top-tier long range optic with Japanese ED glass). For this attempt, I am trying out Norma Tac-22. This ammo is made by RWS in Germany which is also the ammo company used to proof CZ 457 rifles at the factory. I have heard good reports on this ammo but my experience with my Ruger Precision Rimfire rifle yielded mixed results.

BoomStick Budget Rifle & Ammo Challenge

BoomStick @FukuYTmark6 and LongRilfe @MnShootingSports have set up a 50-yard rimfire challenge that is right up my alley: Budget. This challenge target has six 3/4″ target rounds which is pretty standard but the real challenge is the limitations on the price of the gear and ammo you can shoot it with.

This challenge is limited to factory rifles (no upgraded trigger or barrel) and optic must have a retail price of less than $700 combined. Moreover, the rimfire ammo used must be bulk box 22LR and excludes more premium ammo types such as CCI Standard and Norma Tac22 (CCI standard is premium? love it!).

I’m a dumpster diver at heart so I accept this challenge with a smile. My rifle is a factory Ruger Precision Rimfire which I bought on a Black Friday sale at Sportsmans Warehouse for less than $300, but for the sake of this challenge, I’m going to count the average sale price today which is about $400. That means the scope I choose has to cost less than $300. Fortunately for me, I recently reviewed the Discovery Optic LHD 8-32×56. A very high magnification scope for a very budget price of about $249 https://youtu.be/Jn7LcnJBsbg

For the challenge, my Ruger RPRF was installed with UTG Reconflex bipods (retails for about $49) and I shot it with Aguila Super Extra High Velocity 40grn CPRN.

During the challenge run, I initially aimed at the center of the dots but experienced a climbing point of impact. While attempting to compensate by aiming toward the bottom, the point of impact sometimes shifted downward. By the 3rd target circle, I gave up compensating and simply aimed at the center. About 50% of my shots were flyers. All in all, I only scored 11 out of a possible 18.

DATR FTS Overwatch Mission

Day at the Range is a popular YouTube channel that creates uniquely designed and fun rimfire challenge targets. He shoots them on his channel and encourages other shooters to download them and share their results. This December he created a snowman themed target where we have to protect Frosty The Snowman (code name: FTS) from being melted by evil suns.

I downloaded the target and added some festive holiday colors to the otherwise black and white target. I posted my target at the prescribed 50yrds and after zeroing my scope, proceeded to shoot at each sun. I missed about half of them unfortunately. Worse yet, I hit FTS with one of the misses. I only managed a meger score of 2 points but it was a fun attempt nonetheless.

If you’re interested in the scope I was using in this video, its the new Discovery Optic LHD 8-32×56. A very high magnification scope for a very budget price. I reviewed it https://youtu.be/Jn7LcnJBsbg

You can download this target on the Day at the Range website https://dayattherange.com/fts-overwatch-mission/

Hazzbro’s Hammer Time

Hazzbro is a reloading YouTuber who I met (virtually) on the Guns, Beer, and Therapy livestream hosted by American Hillbilly. He created a Mario themed target shooting contest called the Hammer Time Challenge. He’s inviting everyone to download his targets and shoot it for points and to post up your results.

I took up the challenge and download the 22LR target sheet. After my falling plates match at the range, I set up Hazzbro’s target at 50yrds and shot them with my CZ457 using CCI standard velocity ammo. We’re in the middle of a heat wave here in the San Francisco Bay Area and unfortunately, by mid-afternoon the 50yrd line was fully exposed to the sun.

It was an uncomfortable process of zero’ing out the scope and shooting the targets. But I managed to not miss too often or hit Mario. Still I failed to hit either of the coin targets and only scored a 16 after penalties. Can I do better? Possibly. Certainly with better ammo but I’m reasonably satisfied with my performance, though I won’t be winning any prizes with it.

Moondog 100yrd Challenge

https://youtu.be/QVVreiSEocY

Last year I challenged Old Fat dad to a virtual marksmanship contest. We each shoot 3 targets from 100 yards, shots into each target. The total score would be based on hits on the numbered rings. Hits breaking a line counted as the next higher value. The X-ring would only be used for tie-breakers, otherwise scoring as a 10.

As Old Fat Dad says, “Everybody hates a tie.” My target had 2 pure hits inside the X-ring (including one almost dead center), whilst Old Fat Dad’s best target had 1 carving hit on the X-ring. I won this contest. It was very close but that’s how she breaks.

Like last year, we’re inviting our viewers to join in on the fun and see how well you can shoot my targets. Print out your own targets and send us a video your attempt. Everybody who sends us a photo or video, regardless of score, will be entered in a drawing to win my personal Barra H20 rifle scope.
